With the Chewbacca mask being It's now Facebook's biggest live video ...it got me thinking
Why do we need to wear a mask to laugh?
Is it a necessary prop which helps us to allow the first domino to truly be toppled? To knock down the walls piece by piece in a rapid chain reaction which sends adrenalin rushing through our bodies bringing every cell to a state of alertness and tears to our eyes?
Is it the masks that free us to experience and express our true joyful essence without fear of recrimination or judgments or does it perhaps provide the wearer with a false sense of security or indeed, identity?
Is it a tool utilized to help us generate a feeling of inner liberation, enabling our true outer expression to seep through the façade or is it used to hide behind, to portray a pseudo persona, to literally mask our divine essence self from the eyes of others.
What is it about the mask which allows us to behave in ways that we otherwise would not?
The mask has been worn throughout history for a myriad of reasons Mankind has donned masks to imitate, appease and summon the gods. Masks have been used to protect the wearer from the eyes of the onlookers, to hide their identity, deformity, and beauty.
Masks can be worn to project a sense of superiority, for denoting a mark respect or a mark of belonging for groups or factions with a higher purpose, be that purpose unity or division; masks can instill the fear of God, the joy of adoration and high esteem into believers.
Generating the illusion of uniqueness of wonder of awe and mystery is a powerful tool indeed. The wearer can create an otherworldly attraction, allure and mystique for those with the eyes of curiosity to be drawn into, who may forever be caught in the web of seeking to see or become what is behind the mask.
In this fast passed high pressure world we have created, humanity has unconsciously become intrinsically tied to the mask, reliant upon its many guises to navigate through the stormy seas and calm breezes on the wheel of life. Unaware of our deep-seated nature, our desire to be one and nonetheless to be acknowledged as an individual, many people mask their pain and endeavor to engender their delight with drugs
The point they may believe is to “catch a break”, get away from it all, maybe reach a peaceful place of respite a perceived position above another, of power or perhaps it is to seek that fast track to liberation and enlightenment
Whatever the goal may be, the mask continues its attachment in our societies, as one collective everyone has the choice to live their lives through the guise of masks or not. Making good use of the masks we wear, could be exploring the inner and outer landscape with childlike fascination, to play in harmony, to learn with humility in tolerance and understanding of our differences.
Making the choice to abuse self and another whether conscious or not of the powerful masks donned, may be hiding intention behind them for protection, to deceive, to entice, for power control and greed. It may also be to bring about a sense of connection or simply using masks for adornment as a visible symbol for others to be on familiar terms with.
